Overview
Trainworks is a major heritage tourism attraction located on the Southern fringe of Sydney. The facility houses The Heritage Rail Collection of NSW Railways including a number of high value collection assets like the Royal and Governor Generals Carriages. Our engagement was to take the bare building shell from the base building contractors (Robson Civil Projects) design the visitor experience across the whole site and implement the fit out / site interpretation works as Principal Contractor. The time frame for this project was particularly aggressive and the multidisciplinary technical requirements were significant.
This comprised fit out and all interpretation inc. way-finding, site circulation and a large playground. A thematic structure was overlaid on the ‘museum zone’ and objects sourced from various collections for display in custom joinery and showcases, interpreted with soundscapes, copy, touch-screen interactives and audio visual. A substantial object theatre tells the story of one locomotive through 20th century Australian history. A ‘kids zone’ explores collection items and technology with set pieces, digital interactives and traditional interactive displays. The centre receives 80,000 visitors annually.
