Overview
HPA has had involvement with Sandakan Memorial Park for 20 years. In 1999 HPA (then Hewitt Pender Associates) were engaged by DVA to examine development of a small scale interpretive facility on the site of the Prisoner of war camp. The site at that stage was little more than jungle scrub land with little evidence of the WW2 camp.
The initial DVA engagement was advice regarding protection of the sites heritage remnant value and master planning. Subsequently Phase 1 saw the commemorative pavilion, an interpretive walkway trail and a memorial designed and constructed. In 2009 Phase 2 saw significant site rehabilitation works, replacement of all interpretive signage, an audio visual program, new access walkway and a new
dedicated RSL Memorial were constructed.
In 2013, HPA designed and managed construction of a new Amenities Building for the Park, located adjacent the main gate. This was designed by HPA and Arups Malaysia and constructed by First Reign Contracting as sub contractor to HPA.
In 2015 HPA designed and managed construction of new walkways and signage. This included installation of lighting to the park walkway. All materials for the walkway were prefabricated and shipped from Sydney or Adelaide in four shipping containers.
